Roberto Mancini warned of a tough game against Parma tomorrow, but the Inter Coach has sparked a new row with Brazil over Adriano’s international duties.
The relations between the club and Selecao has been strained for many years, but Carlos Alberto Parreira’s comments this week – suggesting stars such as Adriano and Ronaldo are playing badly because they are “saving themselves for the World Cup” – did not go down well with Mancini.
“I don’t think that is the case, especially as players are paid by their club, not their country,” insisted the Nerazzurri tactician. “They have to give their best to the club sides and besides that I have never seen a player try to limit himself ahead of a major tournament.”
Instead, Mancini has another reason behind Adriano’s disappointing performances this term and how to rectify it in the future.
“I think we should give players the right to choose whether or not they’ll accept a call for international duty. Some people are unable to handle constant games at a certain tempo and therefore suffer injuries.”
Inter are hoping that Adriano can rediscover his form on Saturday afternoon against his old club Parma at the Stadio Tardini.
“This’ll be a difficult game and we will need to play as a tough team, the same way we took on Sampdoria and Lazio. We mustn’t risk looking ahead to the Champions League tie with Villarreal, as we’ll have time for that later. Getting back into second place is a very important part of our campaign.”
Mancini will be without Luis Figo, but admits he is likely to choose Alvaro Recoba upfront once again.
“Parma are putting in a good season considering all the problems they have had, so the credit goes to the Coach, players and club infrastructure. As for our own strikers, this time will pass, as our main problem is the haste that grips us as we approach the goal. Obafemi Martins is a prime example, as he’s so quick that his feet sometimes get ahead of him.”
