Adriano is back with a bang as the Inter hero broke his goal drought after 849 minutes of football to beat Sampdoria at the San Siro.
Roberto Mancini faced his former club and knew he needed a win to keep track of Milan in second place. Adriano returned from a two-match ban and Juan Sebastian Veron was fit again, but Javier Zanetti and Marco Materazzi were suspended. Sampdoria had lost their last three on the trot and were without Aimo Diana, while the season is over for injured strikers Emiliano Bonazzoli and Fabio Bazzani.
Sampdoria had the first chance after three minutes when Nicolas Burdisso slipped and sent Max Tonetto running, but Francesco Flachi's volley only struck the side-netting.
The Blucerchiati were very aggressive and kept Inter under constant pressure in these early stages with the crosses of Tonetto and Andrea Gasbarroni causing serious problems, notching up five corner kicks in the opening 11 minutes.
From one of these set-pieces, the ball went over to Cristian Zenoni for a powerful volley that was just over the bar.
Inter's first shot on goal came after 16 minutes, as Luis Figo drilled over the bar from the edge of the box and Pierre Wome's shot was also off target after skipping past two challenges.
The home side was now passing the ball around more, but Samp remained dangerous on the counter-attack and Gasbarroni's first touch let him down in a promising position.
Adriano has not scored for over 800 minutes of football and was extremely unlucky not to break that drought, as he leapt above the crowd to head a corner kick on to the far post.
Moments later, Francesco Toldo flew to turn a spectacular long-range Sergio Volpi chest and volley round the post with one outstretched hand. It would've been a very impressive goal had it not been for an equally extraordinary intervention.
The Blucercjiati had another great chance when Flachi's shot was charged down by Wome on Palombo's intelligent through ball.
Gasbarroni also fired just wide of the upright, although Toldo seemed to have it covered.
However, it was Adriano who finally broke his goal drought before the break, even if he was unfortunate again during the move. His header from a Figo cross was fingertipped on to the bar, but the Brazilian could not be stopped from nodding in at the second attempt.
Adriano had not hit the back of the net in an Inter jersey since the 3-2 win over Cagliari on January 15.
He had the opportunity for a second, but couldn't make the most of Wome's cross to the back post, as Dejan Stankovic was in a better scoring position.
Adriano took advantage of a defensive error after the break and rushed towards the area, but he was booked for simulation when he fell as Francesco Antonioli came sliding in. It was a harsh decision, as he appeared to be trying to jump over the goalkeeper and didn't quite make it.
Inter really should've doubled their lead moments later, as Antonioli only beat away an Adriano missile into the path of Recoba, who incredibly fired wide of a totally open goal from six yards. The Uruguayan insisted on using his left foot and dragged it off target, just clipping the outside of the post.
Recoba was more accurate from 20 metres, although Antonioli managed to smother his shot at the second attempt.
Toldo performed another fantastic reaction save on Volpi's daisy-cutter of a free kick from the edge of the area.
Adriano curled a free kick over the bar and Flachi made way for teenage sensation Salvatore Foti.
The Brazilian was very active and clearly back to full fitness, firing over under pressure at the end of a counter-attack. Adriano then intercepted a poor Antonioli pass, but substitute Obafemi Martins was unable to turn that into a goal.
Without a goal for two months, Adriano had the bit between his teeth and brought another tricky save out of the Blucerchiati goalkeeper. He then sprinted forward and set up Martins, who was crowded out at the last moment.
