Inter are on the verge of signing Bayern Munich captain Michael Ballack, according to reports in Italy.
Although speculation in the English media on Tuesday suggested that the German was on his way to Chelsea, the Italian outfit seem to be in pole position for the playmaker.
After releasing an official statement in which Ballack denied having an agreement with the London club, it is understood that the midfielder’s entourage held talks with Nerazzurri officials in Florence last night.
His agent Michael Becker is said to have met with Inter’s Rinaldo Ghelfi and Marco Branca, where the two parties outlined preliminary terms.
Football Italia understands that the San Siro giants have offered the player a three-year deal worth just under £3.5m a season.
Although that is substantially less than what Chelsea are allegedly ready to pay him, Ballack is seriously considering a move to the Nerazzurri.
The 30-year-old, who will play against Italy this evening at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, will quit his present club at the end of the season on a free transfer.
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Milan had all shown an interest in the former Bayer Leverkusen ace but it now seems to be a straight choice between Chelsea and Inter.
Nerazzurri boss Roberto Mancini would certainly welcome Ballack’s arrival, especially if Juan Sebastian Veron does return to Argentina in the summer.
Meanwhile, there are even some suggestions this morning which claim Ballack could sign a pre-contract agreement with Inter next week while on Champions League duty against Milan.
The German giants travel to the San Siro after last week’s 1-1 draw in which Ballack scored the opener.
