Inter remain relatively toothless in attack and were held to a goalless draw at Livorno, but only a Cristiano Zanetti goalline clearance rescued the Nerazzurri.
Internazionale have lost sight of the Scudetto and were here looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat, although the tension and controversy that followed the 2-1 loss to Juventus may have affected their concentration.
Roberto Mancini's touchline ban for that fiery finale to the Derby d'Italia relegated him to the stands along with the injured Juan Sebastian Veron, but he made seven changes ahead of the Champions League clash with Ajax. Carlo Mazzone's Livorno were fresh from a 2-0 win over rivals Fiorentina and hoped to continue their fine form as they chased a UEFA Cup spot.
Inter went close almost immediately with Marco Amelia parrying a Marco Materazzi header.
Francesco Toldo was given a surprise start in goal and repaid Mancini for that faith with a fantastic reaction save on Diego De Ascentis' right-foot strike.
Adriano's fierce but central shot from distance was smothered, then Amelia flew to fingertip a dangerous Obafemi Martins cross-shot out from under the bar.
Materazzi was booked for blocking a pass towards Cristiano Lucarelli with his arm, although some of the Amaranto players requested a straight red for intercepting a clear scoring opportunity.
Jorge Vargas slipped on the edge of the area, but was able to recover the situation before Adriano and Martins could pounce.
Nigerian international Martins thought he'd opened the scoring when he skipped past several defenders and got round the goalkeeper, but the angle was too narrow and he tripped up as he tried to aim his shot.
After the restart, Adriano went close with a free kick that skimmed the woodwork, but an extremely late Pierre Wome tackle saw David Balleri stretchered off with a suspected sprained knee. Surprisingly the Cameroon international escaped a booking for effectively stamping on top of the Livorno man's knee.
Luis Figo was thrown on for the disappointing Kily Gonzalez, while Stefano Morrone's diving header on Marc Pfertzel's cross was off target from a promising position.
Adriano drilled another hopeful effort wide and January signing Cesar Aparecido made his Inter debut by replacing Santiago Solari for the final 15 minutes.
The Nerazzurri remained toothless in attack, as Adriano's deflected header and a Wome shot failed to trouble Livorno, although Amelia did perform a fine save on Figo's daisy-cutter from the edge of the box and Martins' follow-up.
However, it was Livorno who were ready to celebrate victory in stoppages, as Cristiano Zanetti's goalline clearance kept out a looping Cesar Prates free header on a corner kick.
