Roberto Mancini is unconcerned by speculation suggesting he will be sacked if Inter fail to win the Champions League. “And just after they’d put new seats in the dug-out too,” he joked.
It was reported in the English Press today that Mancini is likely to be dismissed from his post unless he guides the Nerazzurri to European Cup glory this year.
The Daily Mirror also claimed that Massimo Moratti was lining up a £50m bid to tempt Rafa Benitez away from Anfield as his replacement.
However, Mancio remained philosophical about the possibility of being shown the door at the San Siro.
“And just after they’d put new seats in the dug-out too,” he joked. “Football is a risky business, but I will always give my best to try to win and so as not to have any regrets or remorse. After that, anything can happen.”
The Nerazzurri boss also issued an apology for the public outburst that earned him his second one-match ban of the season this weekend.
“In my opinion they were wrong to disqualify me because this sanction has got nothing to do with the referee,” he declared.
“It has everything to do with the other thing that happened in the tunnel that leads to the changing rooms.”
The 40-year-old tactician was referring to his shouting match with Juventus Vice-President Roberto Bettega in the aftermath of his side’s defeat to the Italian champions, in which Mancini hurled insults at the Bianconeri legend.
The Juve players were subsequently shut out of their changing rooms when Dejan Stankovic locked them out.
“I lacked respect and I would like to publicly apologise,” added the Inter Coach. “It must never happen again.”
The controversial defeat to Juventus sparked angry reactions among Interisti, but the Milan-based side certainly didn’t help their cause by disappointing in attack. Not for the first time this season striker Adriano came up short on the big occasion.
Remarkably, though, despite Mancini himself saying after the game that his strikers could have offered a lot more, he refuses to drop his out-of-form Brazilian.
“I will never put him on the bench because he is the only one who can win matches for us,” he continued. “We did speak yesterday, it’s true, but only because we had to clear up a few things.”
