Roberto Mancini admitted last night that his Inter side was in definite need of reinforcements in January. "We do have a small problem," he said.
Mancini’s team registered their sixth consecutive win with their 4-1 victory over Empoli before signing off for a happy Christmas, but Mancini agreed that there was an exigency for fresh blood.
The loss of Adriano - who was rushed to hospital after being knocked unconscious in an aerial challenge during the game - highlighted the desire for more playing resources, particularly in attack.
Although Adriano recovered from his worrying clash of heads, Mancini will be without two players in the New Year as they will be on international duty at the African Nations Cup.
"We do have a small problem there," said Mancini. "We will be without two players for up to two months and one of them, Obafemi Martins, is a striker.
"We need to strengthen this area because when we return in January we will be facing a very strenuous run of games."
Last night Julio Cruz came on for Adriano – who had scored a stylish opening goal – and scored a fine effort himself but Martins, who also scored, will be sorely missed.
Mancini though would not be drawn on the identity of any new arrivals.
Victor Obinna, Ronaldo and Antonio Cassano have all been linked with moves, but Mancini limited himself to saying that these are matters that have yet to be discussed.
"I have already said that I am a big fan of Ronaldo because when he was at Inter I used to really enjoy watching him play," he said.
"As for Cassano, I have also complimented him because I think he is an exceptional player," he added. "But as for who will come, I don’t yet know because we have to still discuss the matter properly."
