Serie A Week 14 - 3/12/05 (19.30 UK)
Adriano 24 (I)
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A fantastic Adriano free kick gave Inter a hard-fought win over Ascoli to close in on rivals Milan, but Alvaro Recoba picked up an injury.
The Nerazzurri seem to have found their feet with wins over Parma (in both Serie A and the Coppa Italia), Artmedia and Messina, they were expected to push new boys Ascoli aside.
Inter piled on the pressure early on with a well-worked move - including backheels from Adriano and Juan Sebastian Veron - but they really should've taken the lead on seven minutes. Adriano sprung the offside trap and hesitated in a one-on-one situtation, eventually seeing his shot charged down by Coppola at the near post.
Ascoli also went close with an ambitious Quagliarella volley that was just wide of the target.
Coppola flew to fingertip a deflected Adriano header out from under the crossbar, and from the resulting Recoba corner kick, Biso had to perform a goalline clearance at the near post.
A Dejan Stankovic piledriver shaved the upright and a Bjelanovic header was wide of Julio Cesar's goal.
Adriano broke his goal drought in the Champions League and ended his Serie A barren spell with a great free kick. The Brazilian curled the powerful effort in off the underside of the crossbar to leave Coppola motionless.
There was bad news for the Nerazzurri, who lost Recoba to an injury and was replaced by Obafemi Martins after just 25 minutes. Stankovic's volley on a long Veron pass was wayward from close range.
Julio Cesar was also tested, pushing a dipping Bjelanovic effort over the bar and another Stankovic attempt was wide. Ascoli also had to make a change, as Nicola Zanini replaced the injured Della Morte.
Ascoli refused to give in and a deflected Biso shot from the edge of the box was smothered by the Brazilian goalkeeper.
They went even closer after the restart, as Javier Zanetti's intervention proved decisive to prevent Zanini turning in at the back post. Maurizio Domizzi performed a similar trick to cut out an Adriano cross on its way to Martins.
Coppola was under siege on the hour mark and required two incredible point-blank reaction saves on Adriano and then Esteban Cambiasso, who couldn't score from six yards.
Del Grosso's free kick took a deflection off the wall and Walter Samuel did well to clear with Julio Cesar wrong-footed.
A Stankovic missile from distance skimmed the frame of the goal, but the game remained in the balance. Martins really should've scored in stoppages when he sprinted away from the defenders, but drilled wide of the target.
