Obafemi Martins has practically booked Inter’s place in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 1-0 away victory at Parma.
Times have changed since the Nerazzurri were hammered 6-1 here in the 2000-01 Coppa Italia and both clubs fielded reshuffled sides.
It was a slow start and Sinisa Mihajlovic tested De Lucia with one of his trademark free kicks from 35 metres and a Dedic angled drive was saved by the returning Francesco Toldo. Cigarini’s ambitious volley from the edge of the box was off target for Parma.
Almost all Inter’s chances came from Mihajlovic set-pieces, his corner kick setting up Nicolas Andre Burdisso for a central header. Julio Cruz also had a strike pushed round the post.
Parma went even closer with 17-year-old substitute Paponi, who within seconds of stepping on to the pitch took advantage of Andreoli’s error, but was blocked at the last moment by Pierre Wome.
The game finally sprung to life in the final 20 minutes with Obafemi Martins leading the charge. First the Nigerian brought a tough double save out of De Lucia, then 120 seconds later he was allowed a free header to turn in another Mihajlovic corner kick and give Inter a potentially decisive away goal.
With the deadlock at last broken, the Nerazzurri were allowed more space for the counter-attack and introduced Alvaro Recoba for Cruz. The Uruguayan’s lob nearly beat De Lucia, but the Parma goalkeeper got back in time to flap it out of the net.
Although only a slender result, it will be very difficult for Parma to overturn this defeat at the San Siro in the second leg.
