Recoba 6 (I), Cambiasso 58 (I), Di Napoli 70 (M)
Stadio San Filippo

Roberto Mancini celebrated his 41st birthday with a victory in Sicily thanks to an impressive Alvaro Recoba performance.
He hoped Inter would put their inconsistency behind them after qualifying for the knockout round of the Champions League. Adriano broke his goal drought against Artmedia midweek with a hat-trick, while Messina welcomed Riccardo Zampagna back from his lengthy ban and were looking for their first home win.
Inter broke through with their first real scoring opportunity and Alvaro Recoba ended his own goal drought. The Uruguayan volleyed in a Dejan Stankovic cross from the right after Rahman Rezai had slipped.
Zampagna wanted a penalty for Wakter Samuel's handling offence, but the two players were very close together and it did not seem to be voluntary.
Stankovic was very lively and almost grabbed a second, his header from a tight angle going all the way across the face of goal.
Moments later it was Messina who nearly snatched an equaliser, as Julio Cesar performed a great one-handed save on Gaetano D'Agostino's angled drive.
There was further controversy on 20 minutes, as Javier Zanetti clipped Ivica Iliev's heel as he ran into the box, but the referee waved play on. Iliev and Coach Bortolo Mutti were furious at the decision.
Adriano horribly wasted a golden opportunity on the half-hour mark, as he had a totally free header on Recoba's cross and somehow managed to miss the target by a good six metres.
Adriano and Zampagna free kicks were just wide of the goal, then Luis Figo's effort was deflected past the post.
Recoba was on fine form and skipped past two defenders inside the area, but Storari stuck up a hand to block his attempted chip from two yards and Messina hung on.
Julio Cesar did well to push D'Agostino's swerving left-foot snapshot out of the top corner of the net after the restart. He also performed a save on Iliev, as Messina tried to find a way back into the game.
Recoba's long-range drive skimmed the upright, but it was Esteban Cambiasso who doubled Inter's lead on the hour mark. A corner kick took a few deflections before Ivan Cordoba held up the ball for the ex-Real Madrid midfielder to turn in from six yards.
Oba Martins came on and within seconds had aimed a powerful effort under the crossbar that Marco Storari flew to push over.
There could be repercussions for Inter, as Messina defender Andre Kpolo Zoro threatened to walk off the pitch after receiving racist insults from the Inter fans. Adriano convinced him to reconsider and the game could continue.
Messina got back into the game with 20 minutes to go when Julio Cesar only parried Massimo Donati's drive from the edge of the box and Arturo Di Napoli pounced on the loose ball.
Martins should've made it 3-1 when he shrugged off a Zoro challenge, but his lob was deflected over when he could have crossed for the totally unmarked Adriano.
