Both sides had penalty shouts and good scoring opportunities, but the big game between Lazio and Inter ended in a stalemate.
The Nerazzurri will never forget the 4-2 defeat here on May 5 2002, which lost them the Scudetto on the final day of the season, but above all it was the return to the Olimpico of former Lazio stars Roberto Mancini, Giuseppe Favalli and Sinisa Mihajlovic. Another ex-Biancocelesti man, Juan Sebastian Veron, was still suspended. Mancini was out with a touchline ban, but curiously chose to watch the game on television in the team bus rather than in the stands.
Inter had not won here since 1996, managing just four draws and five defeats. Angelo Peruzzi returned in the Lazio goal, while Goran Pandev and Ousmane Dabo replaced the injured Paolo Di Canio and Fabio Liverani. Adriano retained his place despite his recent poor form.
There was heavy rain over the capital and sliding challenges became dangerous, as Marco Materazzi discovered when he was booked for hacking down Tommaso Rocchi from behind.
Sebastiano Siviglia did well to close down Obafemi Martins as he prepared to pull the trigger inside the area.
Inter went very close to opening the scoring after 12 minutes, as a Mihajlovic corner kick was whipped in for the head of Adriano, whose wayward effort was almost redirected into the net by Esteban Cambiasso from close range.
Moments later, Adriano's dipping effort on the counter-attack was just over the bar. However, at the other end, Favalli needed to time his intervention perfectly to prevent Rocchi scoring a certain goal from eight yards with only the goalkeeper to beat. The ex-Empoli man had sprung the offside trap on Pandev's inspired through ball.
Adriano's free kick from 20 metres dipped inches over the crossbar and settled on to the roof of the net. Siviglia slipped when a long ball reached Martins, but managed to lift his foot from the ground to flick it out of the Nigerian's reach.
Lazio had a great chance to take the lead seconds later, as Cesar came sliding in on a Pandev cross and his accidentally looping finish was batted out from under the crossbar by Julio Cesar.
There was chaos in the Inter area on 25 minutes, as Valon Behrami's first cross couldn't quite reach Rocchi and it was cleared ineffectively, then another centre from the right found Cesar to put it back in for Pandev to slide into the net. However, the whistle had already gone for Cesar's debatable push on Ze Maria.
A curling Adriano effort from distance was well wide and his header was also off target. Mihajlovic was booked for another sliding challenge on Pandev.
Lazio really should have scored with a wonderful team move, as Cesar's cross came in for the unmarked Valon Behrami at the back post, but he somehow managed to side-foot it wide from seven yards.
There was bad news for Inter after 34 minutes, as Mihajlovic pulled up with a suspected thigh strain and limped off to make way for former Roma star Walter Samuel. The Serb was clearly furious at this latest setback, as he already missed two months of this season with injury.
Pandev was told to get up after falling under a challenge from Samuel and Julio Cesar smothered Luciano Zauri's follow-up angled drive.
Luis Figo burst through two clumsy Lazio defenders and put in the cross for Martins, but it was charged down by Cribari before it could reach its target. From the resulting corner kick, Materazzi's ambitious overhead kick was wide of the near post.
Lazio also lost two players to injury, as Fabio Firmani suffered a knee problem when falling awkwardly and he was replaced by Roberto Baronio just before half-time. Peruzzi suffered a relapse of his muscular trouble during the break and made way for veteran Marco Ballotta. Ze Maria also had a knee setback and was replaced by Cristiano Zanetti for the second half.
Within 60 seconds of the restart, Martins ran on to a long ball and his lob on the on-rushing Ballotta was off target.
There was controversy in the Biancocelesti area, as Siviglia slipped and handled Zanetti's cross, but the referee judged the movement to be involuntary and waved away penalty appeals.
Rocchi burst forward on the counter-attack and fired over the bar, then Zauri's hopeful effort from distance was plucked out of the air, but Inter were increasingly piling the pressure on Lazio in this second half.
Martins slipped at the crucial moment as Figo's chipped pass had left the defence for dead, but the youngster was unable to make the most of it.
Baronio's long-range volley took two deflections on its way out for a corner, then Martins fell in a duel with Cribari and the referee chose to award a free kick against the Inter player. The two seemed to be pushing each other, but of the pair, the Lazio defender looked to be the most aggressive.
Martins had nobody else to blame, however, when he slipped at the decisive moment. The Nigerian sprung the offside trap and shimmied to leave both remaining defenders on the floor, then lost his balance and tripped up when all he had to do was shoot.
Obagol was a man on a mission and his strike was charged down by Oddo's back, but at the other end Cesar's cross went past Julio Cesar and the goalkeeper managed to scramble Rocchi's cutback under control.
Ballotta was at full stretch to fingertip Figo's chip over the bar,
Adriano, who was again ineffective, was replaced by Alvaro Recoba for the final 15 minutes of this intense match, while Simone Inzaghi took over from Pandev.
Ballotta also smothered another impressive Figo attempt, a rising half-volley from the edge of the box that was set up by Martins. In stoppages, Figo's curling cross missed both the defenders and Cambiasso at the back post.
