Inter have taken the unusual step of sending Brazil a doctor’s note in a desperate attempt to prevent Adriano from playing in an international friendly.
Brazil want the 23-year-old to turn out for them in a friendly tournament in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, but Inter insist that Adriano needs to recover properly from a shoulder injury and not travel to the Middle East.
To this end, the Nerazzurri have sent a letter from Doctor Franco Colombi to the medical staff of the Seleçao explaining the need for the striker to stay in Italy.
“He explained that he needs specific treatment and must therefore remain in Milan,” said Inter President Giacinto Facchetti. “We hope that they understand that it is in their interests.”
It seems that Adriano can’t keep out of the news at the moment. A spell of poor form, a shoulder injury and a reputed split from his girlfriend has resulted in an unhappy Adriano missing a recent game after returning late from Brazil, turning up late for training and leaving pitch-side on Tuesday night before his side’s game with Porto had ended.
Now there appears to be more controversy for the 23-year-old to deal with as he has expressed a desire to play in the friendly matches on November 12 and 15.
“Wearing the Brazil shirt is a great honour for me,” Adriano told Brazilian daily Folha via his agent Gilmar Rinaldi. “Turning the down has never crossed my mind, but I must be sure not to compromise recovery from my shoulder injury.”
It is precisely this shoulder complaint that Inter are hoping will prevent their wayward star from taking yet another leave of absence.
“I can completely understand Adriano’s position,” added Facchetti. “It’s difficult to turn down your country. Let’s just hope that Brazil use a bit of common sense.”
Should they fail to, Inter are expected to win the fight to keep the player as, in this instance, FIFA rules weigh the scales in their favour.
