MILAN, October 26 (Serie A) - Roma held on for an important win over Internazionale although they came close to throwing away a three-goal lead at the San Siro.
A goal from Vincenzo Montella and two from Francesco Totti punished Inter who were 3-0 down after 47 minutes and Roma looked certain to take the points until Inter's Brazilian star Adriano entered the fray.
Adriano made Roma sweat for the duration of the second half with goals in the 67th and 77th minute threatening to salvage a point for Roberto Mancini's side.
But Roma held on as Juan Sebastian Veron and Totti were both dismissed in stoppage time for a set-to on the side of the field.
Roma began the game as they began their derby with Lazio on Sunday, putting their opponents under pressure immediately.
Totti was playing with his heart on his sleeve and it didn't take long for him to carve out the first chance for Leandro Cufre, who struck a well-worked free-kick over from 25 yards.
That was a warning shot that Inter failed to heed and, 60 seconds later, Roma were ahead when Montella stretched at the feet of Julio Cesar to poke Rodrigo Taddei's cross in from close range.
The goal spurred Inter into action and they thought they were level in the 21st minute when Veron raced through to reach Esteban Cambiasso's cross, but the Argentinian midfielder had timed his run a split second too early and was called back for offside.
Alessandro Mancini and Julio Cruz hit the woodwork with chances at both ends and just as it seemed more likely for the home side to draw level than Roma to double their lead, Totti produced a piece of magic.
The Italian striker raced in from the left and, as space opened up in front of him, wound back his right leg as if lining up a pile-driver from 20-yards.
Instead he chipped the ball delicately over Julio Cesar for his 113th Serie A goal.
The lively Montella wasn't keen to be outshone by his captain and he had the chance to make it three before the interval, but Walter Samuel stretched out a leg to deflect his shot over the bar.
The visitors had to wait just 33 seconds into the second half for the chance to get a third, however, as Marco Materazzi was adjudged to have clipped the heel of Montella inside the box.
Totti grabbed his 114th Serie A goal, sending Julio Cesar the wrong way from the spot.
It was going to be an uphill struggle for Inter, but Mancini's side seemed to have accepted the challenge as they set up camp in the Roma half with Cruz going close with Simone Perrotta clearing his effort off the line.
Inter's pressure paid off in the 67th minute when half-time substitute Adriano topped Totti's earlier effort with a 25-yard curling free-kick which clipped the right-hand post on its way in.
Adriano was on hand to reduce the deficit further in the 77th minute when Doni dropped the ball after falling on his own defender Cristian Chivu, leaving the Brazilian striker with an easy tap-in to make it 3-2.
As passions ran high, Veron and Totti clashed after coming together as the ball ran out near the touchline and both were shown the red card for their head-to-head confrontation.
