Inter put their Derby d'Italia defeat behind them with this convincing 5-0 thrashing of sorry Livorno.
Both sides were missing important players for this match, as Adriano only returned from Brazil early this morning after missing his flight back after international duty. Julio Cesar and Alvaro Recoba were also delayed, while Kily Gonzalez and Dejan Stankovic picked up injuries playing for their countries. The Brazilian goalkeeper's tiredness allowed Francesco Toldo to make his seasonal debut between the posts.
Livorno were without top scorer Cristiano Lucarelli following his red card for dissent in the Tuscan derby and Francesco Coco returned to face the Inter side he left in the summer.
Within 60 seconds Alvaro Recoba and Juan Sebastian Veron had efforts charged down, while Marco Amelia had his palms stung by a Santiago Solari strike.
The goal eventualy arrived in chaotic fashion. A corner kick was not cleared effectively and Marco Materazzi pounced on a deflected Veron shot, turning it into the net off the inside of the upright.
Inter were running riot and doubled their lead soon after, as Giuseppe Favalli's low cross was not intercepted and Julio Cruz comfortably side-footed home from six yards.
Former Nerazzurri defender Fabio Galante required a crucial intervention to prevent Cruz grabbing a second, then proved decisive on Recoba after the Uruguayan had already left goalkeeper Amelia behind, as it was one-way traffic in the first half.
Livorno eventually got a shot on goal after 40 minutes, but Toldo smothered Bakayoko's angled drive at the near post.
It just got worse for the Amaranto, as within two minutes of the restart Francesco Coco had been sent off for hauling down Ze Maria in a clear goalscoring opportunity. From the resulting free kick, Recoba's effort was palmed away.
Moments later, Esteban Cambiasso made it 3-0 with a fierce snapshot, set up by Galante's defensive error.
Inter opened the floodgates for a fourth, as a corner kick was held up by Materazzi for Ivan Cordoba to come sliding in at the near post.
Recoba put the fifth nail in Livorno's coffin on the hour mark, dribbling through the utterly static Amaranto defence with consummate ease.
There was an emotional moment at the San Siro, as Nicolas Andre Burdisso made his comeback after taking almost a year out of football to nurse his young daughter through a serious illness. The Argentine defender was given a standing ovation by the crowd.
Amelia performed some good saves on substitute Luis Figo, but the game had been over for some considerable time.
