Francesco Toldo has aimed furious accusations at Inter of “prejudice” against him and looks set for a January departure.
“I would’ve made a different decision in the summer if I’d known I wouldn’t be playing,” slammed the goalkeeper.
“I have been told that I am on the bench due to a tactical decision, but I get the feeling there is prejudice against me in this club. Last season I won the Coppa Italia as first choice and have kept this side afloat for years, but now I cannot prove my worth.”
The former Fiorentina shot-stopper was already pushed on to the sidelines last term by Alberto Fontana and Fabian Carini, but is now firmly second choice behind Brazilian Julio Cesar. It will inevitably freeze him out of the 2006 World Cup squad and he isn’t hiding his bitterness.
“I do not feel inferior to Julio Cesar,” he told Sky Italia. “He is very young and there was a time when a goalkeeper needed a lot of experience before being chosen to defend the Inter goal.”
A January departure is increasingly likely and Toldo had previously been linked to Manchester United and Arsenal, while a Serie A switch to Palermo has also been suggested.
“Toldo is an excellent goalkeeper and of course I’d take him, just as I’d gladly have signed Christian Abbiati in the summer,” explained Rosanero chief Maurizio Zamparini. “The problem is that his wages are too extravagant for us.”
Inter froze Fontana out of the squad last season for making similar statements criticising Roberto Mancini’s leadership skills and Toldo could face a similar fate.
“There is no doubt that Toldo’s timing was poor, as he should’ve spoken to Mancini instead of going to the Press straight after our 2-0 defeat at Juventus,” noted Nerazzurri President Giacinto Facchetti. “He knows he made a mistake and will speak to the Coach, but we are losing sight of the real problem, which is why we played so badly in Turin.”
