Serie A Week 5 - 25/9/05 (19.30 UK)
Martins 7 (I)
Stadio San Siro
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An Obafemi Martins header proved enough to sink Fiorentina at the San Siro and put Inter in second place and just three points adrift of their next opponents - Juventus.
This was always set to be a great game between the two highest scoring teams in Serie A so far this season. Hitmen Luca Toni and Adriano also faced off, while Inter Roberto Mancini was facing the club with which he began his Coaching career.
Martin Jorgensen, who had been heavily linked to Inter in the past, had the first chance after 90 seconds when his shot was deflected over the bar. At the other end, Sebastien Frey performed a great reaction save on Oba Martins' header.
It was a bright start from both sides and after seven minutes the Nerazzurri broke through. Martins started the move and eventually tapped in when Luis Figo rolled the ball across from the right. However, Fiorentina had reason for complaint, as Adriano was offside when he gathered the ball from Martins and passed to Figo.
Former Inter goalkeeper Frey was again tested by a Dejan Stankovic header at the far post and Adriano's attempt whistled wide of the upright, as Fiorentina were under siege during the opening stages.
There was a scare for the home side when Esteban Cambiasso almost handled a Valeri Bojinov centre, but he was able to readjust his position.
Fiorentina fought back and Marco Materazzi almost accidentally got in the way of a powerful Stefano Fiore volley, but it was clear which team was dominating.
Adriano squeezed between two defenders and his angled drive was kept out by a one-handed Frey save. At the other end, Julio Cesar palmed away a fierce Bojinov strike from the edge of the box.
There was a chaotic move on 33 minutes, as Veron's effort was charged down, so was Cambiasso's and Martins tried a backheel that couldn't beat Frey.
Martins was again dangerous just before the break, as he held off Alessandro Gamberini and toe-poked the ball inches wide of the upright.
In the final seconds of the first half, Fiorentina created their best chance so far. Toni combined with Bojinov and the Italian's shot was palmed just over the bar by an attentive Julio Cesar.
The Viola introduced Manuel Pasqual for the second half in place of Giuseppe Pancaro. Fiorentina were again very dangerous with Toni springing the offside trap, but he hesitated and Julio Cesar was able to snatch the ball off his foot.
Moments later, Martins drilled wide from a tight angle and Stankovic couldn't quite redirect Figo's cross.
Giampaolo Pazzini replaced Bojinov for the final half-hour, but Inter nearly made it 2-0 when Adriano flicked the ball into Stankovic's path and the former Lazio man's attempt was deflected wide. From the resulting Figo corner kick, a Marco Materazzi header was cleared off the line by ex-Inter midfielder Christian Brocchi.
Gamberini had to time his tackle on Martins perfectly as the Nigerian prepared to pull the trigger, but the Inter man's penalty appeals were waved away.
Adriano fired wide from the edge of the box and a Figo corner kick went past everyone until Jorgensen cleared at the far post.
There was a great chance to double their lead on 82 minutes, as Figo combined with Martins and Frey performed a desperate reaction save. The move continued and the Fiorentina goalkeeper was again crucial at point blank range on a Stankovic header.
