Inter's Indian Summer seems to be over after a humiliating and thoroughly deserved 3-2 defeat in Sicily. The scoreline was very flattering to the Nerazzurri, as Palermo rattled the woodwork twice and brought a series of incredible saves out of goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Adriano was the danger man, fresh from scoring two hat-tricks in the space of 10 days against Treviso and Chile, but it was Palermo who had the best start.
Within the first three minutes Andrea Caracciolo had called Julio Cesar into a point-blank reaction save and Marco Materazzi dived in to prevent Bonanni turning in the loose ball from six yards.
Moments later, Adriano brought a tough save out of Nicola Santoni, who was playing in place of injured goalkeeper Matteo Guardalben.
Roberto Mancini surprisingly opted to experiment with Juan Sebastian Veron and David Pizarro in midfield, while Ze Maria stepped in for the injured captain Javier Zanetti.
Another desperate Materazzi intervention prevented Caracciolo getting on the end of Fabio Grosso's centre, as Palermo really piled on the pressure in the early stages of an entertaining game.
Ivan Cordoba brought down Caracciolo on the edge of the area and Eugenio Corini curled in the resulting free kick to give the Rosanero a deserved lead. It was a wonderful set-piece from the captain, who beat Julio Cesar at the far post to celebrate his 250th Serie A appearance.
It really should've been 2-0 less than a minute later, as Stephen Makinwa found space down the left flank and chipped in his cross for Mario Alberto Santana, only for the Argentine to nod it wide.
Julio Cesar then ran a major risk when he tried to dribble round Makinwa less than eight yards from an empty net.
Makinwa took advantage of Christian Terlizzi's error after 35 minutes, but Adriano's shot was charged down and Kily Gonzalez aimed a very weak effort at the grateful Palermo defenders.
Adriano took matters into his own hands on the stroke of half-time, his shot batted away by a nervous Santoni at the near post. At the other end, Makinwa wasted a golden opportunity set up by Bonanni and Caracciolo blasted a half-volley over the bar from a tight angle.
The second half started the same way as the first, with Palermo testing Julio Cesar from close range. Caracciolo's wayward effort turned into an assist for the unmarked Makinwa from six yards, but the young Nigerian fired straight at the goalkeeper.
The Rosanero were in stunning form and Caracciolo was more accurate two minutes later, as his spectacular half-volley was fingertipped on to the crossbar to ruin what would have been one of the goals of the season.
From the resulting corner, Julio Cesar was again forced to push Cristian Zaccardo's fierce drive round the post. The third corner kick was the charm, as Corini curled in for Terlizzi to nod home from six yards, beating Cordoba to the ball.
Luis Figo was thrown on for the disappointing Kily Gonzalez, moving Veron over to the other flank, while Palermo kept up the attacking verve with Mariano Gonzalez.
Inter finally managed to put a good move together on the 62nd minute, as Pizarro and Martins exchanged passes quickly, but Santoni dived on to the Chilean's feet to close him down.
Makinwa wasted a host of chances against Parma last week, but he made up for it with a wonderful header. The former Atalanta hitman rose to nod Santana's cross into the ground and looping over a helpless Julio Cesar.
In a desperate bid to recover something from the game, Mancini introduced Julio Cruz and Alvaro Recoba for Esteban Cambiasso and Obafemi Martins in an all-attack line-up.
It made little difference, as Inter's Brazilian goalkeeper flew to fingertip a stunning Santana lob over the bar, somehow holding on under the Sicilian siege.
Inter finally got a goal back five minutes from time, as Adriano rolled across for a Cruz tap-in that was still nearly cleared off the line by Grosso, but the ball had already crossed the line.
Yet Palermo nearly restored their three-goal cushion when Santana rattled the crossbar with a powerful finish that had beaten Julio Cesar. In stoppages, Mariano Gonzalez and Franco Brienza exchanged several passes on the counter-attack and the latter drilled his finish just wide.
However, with the final kick of the game, Inter substitute Cruz made the final scoreline a more respectable 3-2 with a glancing header.
