Serie A Week 1 - 28/8/05 (14.00 UK)
Stadio San Siro
Adriano 32, 68, 79 (I)
There was no doubting the star of this show, as Adriano opened his Serie A account with a hat-trick to crush debutants Treviso.
Many believe this could be Inter's year at last, as in just over 12 months in charge, Roberto Mancini has already celebrated the Coppa Italia and the Italian Supercup. They had a relatively easy task on paper, welcoming newly promoted Treviso - making their all-time debut in Serie A. Indeed, this was the first ever League meeting between the clubs.
Walter Samuel was out with a three-match ban for spitting at Pavel Nedved during that Supercup Final, while Obafemi Martins was ruled out by injury. Luis Figo made his official debut for the Nerazzurri following his summer move from Real Madrid.
Both teams had an aggressive start with chances for Alvaro Recoba and Andre Pinga, but the first real opportunity came on 15 minutes with Inter's Uruguayan firing over the bar from seven yards.
Moments later, Adriano threatened with a fierce deflected drive that stung the palms of Handanovic.
Recoba trapped Seba Veron's long cross and immediately unleashed a dipping shot that was palmed on to the upright in an impressive move.
Handanovic was almost caught out by a deflected Recoba free kick, but was able to adjust his position in time to tip it over the bar.
Inter's pressure eventually paid off with a classic goal from L'Imperatore. Adriano showed all of his pace, power and strength to sprint on to Marco Materazzi's long pass, skip past Stefano Lorenzi and blast a fierce left-foot finish between goalkeeper and the near post.
Serie A debutants Treviso were anything but nervous and fought back with Julio Cesar forced into a tough save on Reginaldo.
It really should've been 2-0 in stoppages, as Esteban Cambiasso intelligently cut back for his former Real Madrid teammate, but Figo ballooned over the bar from a promising position.
Antonio Filippini went close to an equaliser after the restart, dribbling past a defender and drilling inches over the bar from a tight angle. Then Luigi Beghetto's swerving header was over as Treviso increased the pressure.
Ex-Udinese striker Dino Fava joined on loan this week and made his Treviso debut for the final half-hour.
But Adriano was the star of this particular show amd doubled Inter's lead. He sprung the offside trap on a Dejan Stankovic chipped cross and slipped his finish between the goalkeepers' legs.
Adriano is making a real bid for the Ballon d'Or this year and opened his Serie A season with a hat-trick. David Pizarro dribbled past three players and rolld across for the Brazilian to blast home his third of the game. He was given a standing ovation by the San Siro crowd as he left the field.
