www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug21j.htmlIn just over a year with Roberto Mancini in charge, Massimo Moratti has celebrated two trophies and has no hesitation in thanking the Coach for his work. “I think the credit must go to Mancini,” said the patron following last night’s Italian Supercup win over Juventus. “He has given character and a distinct style of play to the squad.” Moratti managed to pick up just one piece of silverware – the 1998 UEFA Cup – during his decade-long tenure, but Mancini has already lifted the Coppa Italia and the Supercup. “The Coppa Italia victory in June really gave us a boost, as the side needed confidence to look ahead and achieve more,” continued the oil baron. “I am also happy to see how well the new players are settling in.” There were doubts that Mancini had the experience and pedigree to lead such a traditionally troubled club, but he has proved his critics wrong. “I am very glad to assure everyone that my choice of Mancini as Coach was not just because I like him. He is the right man for the job and a very talented tactician.” Curiously, the Nerazzurri have only started winning trophies since Christian Vieri’s departure – he missed the Coppa Italia Final and was rumoured to create problems in the locker room atmosphere. “Vieri was unlucky not to win with us, but I doubt our success had anything to do with that,” insisted Moratti on Sky Sport Italia. “It was pure coincidence.”
