Former Italy and Inter full-back Giacinto Facchetti has replaced Massimo Moratti as president of Serie A giants Inter Milan. Moratti, who remains as owner of the Milan club, resigned on Monday, a day after the team's humiliating 1-0 home defeat by relegation-threatened Empoli. "He's the right man in the right place," Moratti said of Facchetti, who had been an Inter vice-president. "It's not a drama," Moratti told Inter's website. "It's a decision that allows me to take a step back, which allows me to see things better, and nothing else." Moratti has invested millions of pounds into the club since taking over in 1995 but during that time the club have failed to win the Italian league, which they last claimed in the 1988/89 season. Despite players of the calibre of Ronaldo and Christian Vieiri the only trophy won during Moratti's reign was the 1998 Uefa Cup. Their best chance of the title was in the 2001/02 season when they went into the final day of the season leading the championship, but defeat by Lazio handed the title to Juventus and AS Roma overtook them for second. The defeat by Empoli on Sunday left Inter trailing leaders Roma by 11 points with half the season played.
