A Francesco Toldo error proved enough for Parma to inflict a surprise 1-0 defeat on Inter in an open and exciting match.
This was a crucial juncture for both sides, as Inter mounted a realistic title challenge, while Parma were fighting to stay concentrated among their off the field problems.
The Gialloblu were this week ordered to sell three players immediately in order to stave off bankruptcy and one of them - Adriano - is heading back to Inter. The Brazilian is still out following a torn thigh muscle, but should stay at the Tardini until the end of the season on loan.
The Nerazzurri made a few changes from the line-up that beat Lecce 3-1, shelving the trident attack in favour of a more solid 3-4-1-2 system with the introduction of former Parma captain Sabri Lamouchi and Emre Belozoglu moved behind the strikers.
Inter have only ever won here once in Serie A, last season's 2-1 result, so they had reason to be cautious. The two Cannavaro brothers were able to play against each other in a rare family duel.
Christian Vieri had the first shot on goal after two minutes with a fantastic dipping volley, but he was offside so it would not have counted had it gone in.
Moments later Parma had the perfect opportunity to score when Alberto Gilardino sprung the offside trap and skipped past Francesco Toldo, but his finish was weak and allowed the defence to clear off the line of an empty net.
Simone Barone - who bagged both goals in Tuesday's 2-0 win at Ancona - then drilled a good effort over from 25 metres.
Domenico Morfeo was one of several players taking on their former club and he was involved in a clash with Emre that saw the Turk accidentally elbowed in the face.
But on the half-hour mark Vieri went very close to opening the scoring when he rose to meet a Giovanni Pasquale cross, but his looping header thumped the crossbar.
Parma hit back almost immediately and Toldo was at full stretch to fingertip a Domenico Morfeo drive round the far post.
However, the goalkeeper was clearly at fault for Parma's opener just before the half-time break. Toldo completely mistimed his run on a Castellini through ball and Emanuele Filippini intercepted to slide into an empty net.
It was a bad omen for Inter, as so far this season every time Parma have taken the lead in Serie A they have gone on to win the match.
The home side started the second half in a similar vein with Gilardino and Barone efforts whistling wide, while a Julio Cruz looping header was also off target.
Zaccheroni saw his men were struggling and went back to the 3-4-3 system by replacing Lamouchi with the explosive Obafemi Martins.
Parma thought they had doubled their lead, but the goal was correctly disallowed for Filippini's offside position.
Moments later another golden opportunity went begging thanks to Pasquale's desperate intervention in the box.
Junior tried to place in a cross from the byline, but it turned into a looping shot and Toldo did well to tip it over the bar.
The goalkeeper made another mistake on the resulting corner kick, but recovered to charge down Morfeo's close-range effort.
Inter were caught repeatedly offside, but when Cruz did spring the trap his first touch let him down with only Frey to beat.
The second half was end to end stuff and Martins felt the full wrath of Zac when he charged into the box and went for glory at the near post with Vieri standing completely unmarked just a few metres away.
Okan Buruk replaced Pasquale in perhaps the Turkish international's last game before his proposed move to Perugia.
It remained a very open game and Cruz curled one of his trademark free kicks inches past the crossbar, a feat copied by Marco Marchionni at the other end of the field.
There were Nerazzurri penalty appeals when Vieri was sandwiched between two defenders soon after, but the referee was close by and waved play on.
Frey has come under criticism in recent weeks, but he performed a stunning save on Emre's free kick eight minutes from time. The Frenchman was at full stretch and flew to his left to palm out the set-piece as it curled towards the bottom corner of the net.
Zaccheroni went for glory by moving Javier Zanetti to defence and bringing on attacking wide man Andy van der Meyde for the final five minutes.
The Dutchman had a good chance to equalise soon after stepping on to the field, but tried to cross it back when he was off balance and the opportunity went begging.
It turned into a siege during four minutes of injury time, but Frey was solid on a Cruz angled drive.
