Inter midfielder Matias Almeyda is so disillusioned with the game that he will quit football in 2004. "My contract only runs until next July but I’m considering retiring in January," he told ‘Radio El Mundo’. "It is very strange to be playing football in the atmosphere that is around at this present time. Football is filthy at the minute and if it is doesn’t clean up then I will quit in the New Year." Almeyda’s comments will certainly surprise most fans, especially as he is still considered a key figure for his club and country. In fact the former Parma man spent last week in his homeland when he played for Argentina against Colombia. It was expected that Almeyda, who has won a Scudetto with Lazio, would end his career with former club River Plate. "There was a chance a few months ago that I could go to River Plate but that doesn’t seem the case anymore," he added. "I was dreaming of playing in the Copa Libertadores next season but I doubt that will be possible now."
