Alberto Zaccheroni believes his side can yet improve, but the 6-0 drubbing could cost Reggina boss Franco Colomba his job.
“I am starting to see the right spirit,” said Zac following this confident Inter performance. “Fabio Cannavaro’s goal got everyone on the right path.”
The Nerazzurri had become the subject of many jokes during Hector Cuper’s defensive reign, but six goals from six different scorers have silenced the critics.
“The positive thing about Cannavaro’s strike is that a defender pushed forward and went for goal,” added Zaccheroni. “This is a sign that the overall mentality is changing.”
However, the former Scudetto winner maintains that Inter can yet improve, starting with Tuesday’s Champions’ League clash against Arsenal.
“We need to work on our movement off the ball and when it was still 0-0 we seemed to lose our way.”
Above all Christian Vieri was targeted by the fans and he responded by sarcastically applauding them back.
“I encouraged him at half-time,” revealed Zac, “and told him he wouldn’t be substituted, not even if he asked. That reassured him and he played a great second half.”
The mood in the Reggina camp is understandably downcast following their worst ever Serie A defeat.
“Thankfully losing 1-0 or 6-0 to Inter would make little difference to our place in the table,” mused Franco Colomba.
“We must ensure this is the start of a new era for the club and can make us sit down and take a good look at ourselves.”
Colomba may not have the opportunity to do that, as there were already reports that he would be fired before this humiliating experience.
“Everyone must take responsibility for what just happened,” pointed out President Lillo Foti. “We will evaluate our position and that of Colomba, but right now a sacking is not foremost in our minds.”
Ex-Bologna boss Francesco Guidolin has been suggested as a likely replacement on the Amaranto bench.
