Fabio Bazzani is filling in for Christian Vieri in the Italy shirt tonight, but reports suggest Inter want him to take over at club level too. The Sampdoria hitman will earn his first start for the Azzurri against Romania this evening, having made his debut in Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to Poland. Increasingly strong rumours around the Peninsula and beyond claim that Vieri will leave Inter at the end of the season. His most likely destination is Chelsea and some newspapers maintain he has already contacted an estate agent to find a house in London. Parma man Adriano should return from his spell at the Tardini in the summer, although the Gialloblu still own half his contract. But Bazzani would be an ideal replacement for Vieri due to his similar height, build and style of play. “I won’t get bigheaded,” insisted the former Perugia star. “I am still early into my career and right now just making my Italy debut is enough to have me on cloud nine.” The 27-year-old will face a tough task to be part of the Euro 2004 squad as he has strong competition from Vieri and Lazio’s Bernardo Corradi.
