Roma’s financial woes have placed Inter as the favourites to snap up Edgar Davids this summer. The 30-year-old was set for a free switch to the Capital when his contract with Juventus expires in June. However, recent financial problems at Roma have seemingly scuppered the move and the Nerazzurri have stepped in with a more enticing offer. Davids currently earns approximately £2.8m per season and has reportedly bought an apartment in Milan. The Dutchman is not new to this city, as he started his Serie A career with the Rossoneri in 1996 and moved to Turin in December ’97. The most important factor in this potential deal is the presence of new Inter boss Alberto Zaccheroni. Having inherited Hector Cuper’s squad, he is on the look-out for players who suit his 3-4-3 system and the main candidates are Davids and Dejan Stankovic of Lazio – both of whom will be out of contract in the summer. There are also overseas options for the former Ajax man, including Real Madrid and Chelsea. Meanwhile, Turkish international Umit Davala has asked to tear up his contract with Inter. The ex-Milan winger is on loan at Werder Bremen and has been offered a new deal tying him to the German side until June 2007.
