Alberto Zaccheroni has bitterly criticised his players for approaching Lokomotiv Moscow with the wrong attitude.
“Tonight we were not the team that got good results in the past few weeks and we were unable to replicate that winning mentality,” he said following their 1-1 draw.
It is nonetheless a result that keeps Inter top of Group B, but the upcoming San Siro clash with Arsenal will be decisive.
“The most important match is always the next one up, but I must say that often the result comes about because of the team’s attitude.”
“Lokomotiv’s goal was fortunate,” added Zaccheroni, “but overall our performance was disappointing and when Sabri Lamouchi came on we were able to close the gap between midfield and attack and for twenty minutes did quite well.”
“These are our strengths and we really must aim to take that twenty minutes and turn them into a whole match.”
The summer signings were made to suit Hector Cuper’s 4-4-2 system, so the players are struggling to fit in to Zac’s trident attack.
“Kily Gonzalez did three or four good moves, but he is not accustomed to playing in this role and must be given time to adapt. Besides that, he really was not helped by his teammates.”
Alvaro Recoba had given Inter the lead after fourteen minutes, albeit against the run of play, but struggled to make an impact.
“It is certainly a step back with regards to the attitude you need in this competition and we were not dynamic or aggressive enough.”
“The Russians were granted even more space than they needed to thread together a series of passes and that put us under pressure,” he concluded.
“I did fear this might happen after a tense week, but I was hoping for a better result nonetheless.”
