Chievo 0 - 2 Inter
Vieri 64 (I), Recoba 67 (I)
Stadio Bentegodi
Christian Vieri scored one and set up another as Alberto Zaccheroni earns his first win against ten-man Chievo.
Alberto Zaccheroni had ten days to work with his squad, so this was the first opportunity to see his influence on the team. Emre Belozoglu returned to full fitness in order to join the trident attack.
The odds were not in Inter's favour going into this game, as they had never emerged with a win from Verona and Zaccheroni had never beaten Gigi Del Neri.
Alvaro Recoba was bitterly disappointing against Roma last week and was determined to make up for it. Within a couple of minutes he was dragged back by Lorenzo D'Anna and his resulting free kick whistled inches wide.
Christian Vieri has scored in each of his previous meetings with Chievo and his rising drive was palmed over the bar by Luca Marchegiani.
It was a blistering start to the game and Francesco Toldo just about slapped a dangerous Roberto Baronio cross away from his bar.
Recoba was lively and was tripped by D'Anna just as he was about to charge into the box. There were penalty appeals, but replays show the foul was outside the area.
Baronio curled a free kick wide of the near post, but the defensive wall was badly placed and Inter were perhaps fortunate his aim was off target.
Chievo had another good chance to take the lead when Mario Alberto Santana lifted the ball over Marco Materazzi, but Amauri slipped and failed to make the most of it.
Recoba continued to push and drilled a trademark left-foot effort from distance, but Marchegiani got behind it well.
Free kicks remain his best feature and on the half-hour mark a curling set-piece rattled the crossbar with Marchegiani beaten.
There was a moment of controversy on 33 minutes when Vieri and Marchegiani clashed on the edge of the box. The goalkeeper appeared to miss the ball and take down the striker. After consulting his assistant referee Marchegiani was sent off for the last man foul.
Brazilian forward Amauri made way for the substitute goalkeeper Giorgio Frezzolini as Chievo were reduced to ten men for almost an hour. His first touch was a good stop of Recoba's low free kick.
Despite playing with a man less, Del Neri threw on attacking midfielder Sergio Pellissier at the dawn of the second half. Inter also took a forward-thinking step with Obafemi Martins replacing Mathias Almeyda.
But it was Chievo who went close to breaking the deadlock with a fierce Pellissier volley that flew over the bar following a poor clearance.
The Nerazzurri also had scoring opportunities with a Vieri effort deflected wide and Marco Materazzi's header just wide. Frezzolini was called into a difficult save on a fierce Emre drive from distance.
The tradition was upheld as on 64 minutes Vieri rose to nod a sweeping Recoba cross into the bottom corner. The Inter hitman has always scored in every encounter with Chievo, bagging five goals in four games.
That opened the floodgates and the two players combined again for a second goal moments later. This time Vieri put the cross in from the right and Recoba volleyed in from eight yards with the aid of the far post.
Chievo were perhaps fortunate not to be left in nine men when D'Anna appeared to bring down Martins, but the referee merely awarded a free kick.
Francisco Farinos made a late appearance, his first showing for Inter since December 2002.
