Alberto Zaccheroni has had ten days to mould his Inter side, but there are few teams that can get the better of hard-working Chievo.
Zac’s debut on the Nerazzurri bench was a largely disappointing 0-0 draw with Roma and the tension of recent events at the club – Hector Cuper’s dismissal, the 3-0 defeat at Lokomotiv Moscow, a string of injuries and an organised fan protest – was evident in the performance.
Christian Vieri struck the woodwork in stoppage time and it was the latest in a long line of events that have sapped the confidence out of this team. Critics are still waiting for Alvaro Recoba to deliver on his promise in the new 3-4-3 system, but the probable return to full fitness of Emre Belozoglu and Andy van der Meyde should inject some creativity into the squad.
Chievo have really lived up their nickname of The Flying Donkeys this season, as going into the game they are a point ahead of Inter. A defeat at the Bentegodi would therefore be completely disastrous for Zaccheroni’s men, who already languish nine points adrift of the leaders.
Gigi Del Neri was long touted as a potential future Inter Coach due to his hard-working ethic and ability to dent the big clubs’ ambitions. The man to watch is Brazilian Amauri, having already netted two and created several more for his teammates, but this battle may well be won and lost in midfield. Can Italian international and confirmed Inter transfer target Simone Perrotta bring a tear to Massimo Moratti’s eye?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chievo (probable): Marchegiani; Moro, Sala, D’Anna, Lanna; Santana, Perrotta, Zanchetta, Semioli; Amauri, Cossato
Inter (probable): Toldo; Cordoba, Materazzi, Cannavaro; J Zanetti, C Zanetti, Almeyda, Coco; Recoba, Vieri, Kily Gonzalez
