The South Coast clash between Southend and Southampton is the pick of the Carling Cup first round draw.
The Saints have rarely seen first round action in the League Cup, but their recent relegation from The Premiership means they must compete from the early stages.
Harry Redknapp has now been handed a tie against Southend - who won the League Two play-off last term.
The draw, which involves all 72 Football League clubs, is spilt into North and South at this stage to try and prevent any long midweek trips.
Also in the Southern side of the draw, Yeovil will be hoping to upset Ipswich at Portman Road.
Norwich face a tricky trip to Milton Keynes Dons, while Crystal Palace host Paul Merson's Walsall.
The Northern section has thrown up a North East derby as Hartlepool come up against arch-rivals Darlington.
Elsewhere, Oldham travel to Elland Road to take on Leeds, while Chris Turner welcomes his former club Sheffield Wednesday to play his current side Stockport.
The second round will see Premiership clubs enter the fray, although the eight involved in Europe - including holders Chelsea - will not take part until the third round.
Draw in full:
Preston v Barnsley
Chesterfield v Huddersfield
Blackpool v Hull
Mansfield v Stoke
Rotherham v Port Vale
