The 65-year-old comic was in a good conditionA first edition Beano comic belonging to a tea boy who worked for the publishers has sold for a world record-breaking £12,100. The comic - which cost tuppence when it was brought out by DC Thomson of Dundee in 1938 - is one of a dozen or so known to still exist. The young owner had written 'keep first issue' on the cover in pencil. It stayed with his family until it was offered for auction late last year and was sold on Tuesday night. The sale beats the previous record for a British comic of £7,500, set in December 2002 for another copy of the Beano's first edition. Dennis the Menace The latest Beano No 1 was said to be in particularly good condition. It was the star lot this month for Comic Book Postal Auctions, which sold the rare comic. The family that put the comic up for sale has requested no further publicity. Characters featured include Eggo, an ostrich, Lord Snooty and Morgyn the Mighty, a strongman, although children's favourite Dennis the Menace does not feature in the first edition. The mischievous spiky-haired character first appeared on its pages in March 1951. The Beano celebrated its 65th birthday in July 2003 by reproducing its first issue. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3518156.stm
