A nervy night at The Philips Stadion saw PSV Eindhoven progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Lyon after this 1-1 draw was settled by a penalty shoot-out.
The French and Dutch leaders could not be separated after 90 minutes or extra time as they played out a mirror image of the first leg a week ago, but it is PSV who should now face Milan, depending on Uefa's sanctions following the events at The Giuseppe Meazza on Tuesday.
The French outfit were undone in the end by PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes as he saved from both Michael Essien and Eric Abidal from the spot, whilst Robert de Pinho de Souza scored the vital spot kick for the home side after DaMarcus Beasley also saw his effort repelled.
Lyon took an early lead in normal time through Sylvain Wiltord, although the home side fought their way back into the tie admirably as Alex netted a superb volley to restore parity.
The Dutch outfit appeared more adventurous during extra time and went close as their captain Mark van Bommel whipped a free kick just wide, and they were rewarded for their efforts in the lottery of penalties.
Lyon announced their presence in the game early on as they grabbed an away goal thanks to an opportunistic finish from former Arsenal man Wiltord.
PSV stopper Wilfred Bouma attempted to clear his lines with a weak header inside the box, and Wiltord latched onto the loose ball before dispatching with a strong right foot shot as Alex made a despairing attempt to intervene.
PSV responded well to the early set-back and Mark van Bommel tried an audacious drive at goal before Jan Venegoor of Hesselink nearly connected acrobatically to a Jefferson Farfan cross when he tried a midair back-heel.
The home side were looking composed and fluent in attack, as Park Ji-sung and Farfan drove them forward down the flanks, although they could have been undone at the back as Gomes was put under pressure twice due to stray back-passes.
Venegoor of Hesselink could also have pulled his side back into the game, although failed to control when presented with the ball in the box from an incisive van Bommel pass.
Despite the advantageous score-line Lyon were struggling to find a consistent rhythm, whilst PSV's efforts were being undermined by wayward finishing as they failed to seriously test Coupet in the first period.
After a wasteful first half in front of goal it took PSV just five minutes to pull level after the break, and the crucial strike came from the unlikely source of Alex.
The imposing defender found himself in space on the edge of the box from a PSV set piece, and he showed fantastic composure to chest down Abidal's attempted header out and lash in a low right foot volley that blasted past Coupet.
Park then could have doubled their total just a minute later as he cut in from the right and sent a strong curling effort just over the bar.
However the French outfit began to find their stride in the tie, and their own Brazilian centre back Cris attempted to emulate his PSV counterpart Alex with two fantastic efforts within two minutes.
