Udinese were forced to hang on until the final whistle to see off Atalanta 3-2 on aggregate and reach the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
The Friuli outfit had to win after their 1-0 first leg defeat at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia and, with their Champions League exit and disappointing results in Serie A, it had become an important crossroads for the team.
They got off to a bright start, as after just 17 minutes Stefano Mauri levelled the scores on aggregate with a fine team move. Tissone’s long pass was captured and crossed in by Antonio Di Natale for Stefano Mauri to tap home. It was the first goal Atalanta had conceded in the Coppa Italia this season.
However, the visitors fought back and had a great chance with Davide Bombardini, who somehow failed to hit the target with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Mauri and Di Natale’s header were both just over the crossbar, and a fierce strike from the former Empoli man was fingertipped over the bar.
Atalanta put themselves back in charge of the tie during the second half when Luca Ariatti took advantage of a woeful defensive error from Tissone, placing his angled drive past a helpless Paoletti.
Di Natale was on fine form though, and he brought another couple of desperate saves out of Ivan before Mirko Pieri volleyed in a Marco Motta cross at the back post to settle Udinese’s nerves.
The Serie B outfit was still ahead on the away goals rule, but nine minutes from time Ariatti brought down Valerio Bertotto and Di Natale converted the penalty.
It was tense until the final whistle, as a defender charged down Tiboni’s point-blank effort, but Atalanta couldn’t get the decisive goal they needed.
Udinese qualify for the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate and await the result of Cagliari's encounter with Sampdoria to see who they'll be facing.
