Palermo squeezed past Bari and into the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup after an extraordinary nine-goal thriller at the Stadio Barbera on Tuesday afternoon.
In a game that made a mockery of the first-leg stalemate at the San Nicola, the few home supporters who were present were kept on the edge of their seats right up to the final whistle.
The Rosanero made a bright start and took the lead in the seventh minute with only their second attack of the day. Massimo Bonanni cut in from the right and put Mariano Gonzalez through with a threaded pass for the Argentine midfielder to give the home side the lead.
The visitors, though, refused to be down hearted and came back at the Sicilians, primarily by resorting to long balls launched at Vincenzo Santoruvo.
Twelve minutes after going behind the visitors were given the chance to level the tie, when Santoruvo was fouled in the area by Michele Ferri. Although Davide Vantaggiato put the ball in the net - with Mariano Andujar stranded after misjudging a cross - the referee Marco Gabriele had already blown for a penalty. Vantaggiato, though, made no mistake and equalised.
Eight minutes before the break Santoruvo missed a chance to give his side the lead when he headed a fee-kick narrowly wide and he was made to rue his miss on the stroke of half-time.
After keeping out efforts from both Fabio Grosso and Bonanni, Vitangelo Spadavecchia was beaten by Eugenio Corini from the penalty spot after a clear foul by Gabrieli on the promising Gianluca Palmiteri.
But plucky Bari hit back nine minutes after the restart with a fine individual goal from Biagio Pagano, the No 17 finishing off a splendid run with a low shot past Andujar.
In a wonderfully open game, Palermo took the lead again on the hour mark, Paul Codrea rifling an unstoppable free-kick past Spadavecchia from the edge of the area. Three minutes later it was 4-2 as Christian Terlizzi connected on the turn with Bonanni’s free-kick.
By now it was threatening to become a rout as Gonzalez grabbed his second of the day after Terlizzi had touched on substitute Mario Santana’s cross. Incredibly, though, Bari hit back with their third goal of the day when Santoruvo pounced first in a goalmouth melee.
With 20 minutes to go, Bari were thrown a lifeline when Codrea was forced to go off injured, leaving the Rosanero - who had already made all their permitted substitutions - down to 10 men. Eight minutes later Luigi Anaclerio added to the excitement by pulling another goal back to make it 5-4 following good work down the right by Marco Candrina.
In a fraught finale, Bari surged forward looking for the equaliser that would put them through on away goals while Palermo sought to kill the tie off on the counter-attack, but there was to be no tenth goal and Gigi Del Neri’s men were able to breathe a welcome sigh of relief.
