Sampdoria are out of Europe after an injury time Lens goal saw them lose 2-1 in France on Thursday. It had looked like a Francesco Flachi strike would be enough for qualification, before they fell at the very last hurdle.
With just a point required for certain qualification, boss Walter Novellino opted for possibly his strongest line up in UEFA competition so far this term. Although reserve ‘keeper Luca Castellazzi was handed the gloves, Flachi and Emiliano Bonazzoli began in attack for the Genoa outfit. Angelo Palombo and Max Tonetto started in midfield.
Lens set the early pace though and went close as soon as the sixth minute through Dindane, but he was denied by Castellazzi. However, the French side wasted little time in taking the lead. Thomert took advantage of an unfortunate slip by Sala, to then lift the ball over the 'keeper with his left foot to make it 1-0.
Unhappy with the thought of elimination, Doria responded midway through the opening period through Flachi. The Italian, who has struggled for form this term, collected a Bonazzoli flick to slot home a delightful left footed effort in the 24th minute.
Castellazzi was again later called into action from a violent Cousin shot, but it was Sampdoria who almost went into the break with the lead. Bonazzoli and Flachi were proving to be a danger and the latter saw an injury time effort diverted on to the post by Itandje.
Neither boss made any changes after the half-time oranges. Samp and Flachi seemed to open the second period as they ended the first. The striker collected from Bonazzoli but his 50th minute effort flew over the bar. That was to be his last major contribution after he was forced to hobble off with an injury,
Lens needed a win to progress and looked to increase the pressure. However, Castellazzi, Zenoni and Pisano were all alert enough to clear the French danger. The Ligue 1 outfit continued to push forward and they got what they wanted in injury time when Jemaa, a substitute, blasted past Castellazzi to make it 2-1.
Lens now qualify from Group C with Hertha Berlin and Steaua after they drew 0-0 in Germany this evening. Samp finish fourth.
