Palermo have booked their place in Friday’s UEFA Cup draw with a comfortable 3-0 win over Brondby. The Rosanero only needed a point to qualify from their group, but basically wrapped up victory with a 2-0 and one man advantage by half-time.
The Danish outfit, bossed by former Juventus player Michael Laudrup, needed the three points to progress and understandably attacked the Sicilian side in the opening minutes. Lantz and Skoubo worried the home fans in the first 15 minutes before Gigi Del Neri’s side settled.
Santana, Gonzalez and Brienza enjoyed attempts and their pressure eventually paid off in the 26th minute. Nigerian ace Stephen Makinwa finished off a splendid move involving captain Corini, who later went close with a free-kick, and Brienza to make it 1-0.
Palermo tightened their grip of the game in first half stoppage time with a rare Leandro Rinaudo effort. He took advantage of a penalty area scramble to put his side into a commanding 2-0 lead. To make matters worse for the visitors, Rytter picked up his second yellow card for taking his protests over that goal, which he claimed was handball, too far.
With a man extra, Palermo were notably more aggressive after the restart even if they were struggling to finish off some good construction work in the midfield. Santana thus decided to test the Danes from distance, but his 25-yard effort troubled just the advertising boards rather than the Scandinavian custodian.
Palermo opted to basically control the game seeing as Brondby’s attacking threat was somewhat limited. Santana and Brienza decided to show the Barbera public a few of their skills, and both went close to adding a third late on. The ‘keeper superbly saved from the Italian, before Santana hit the outside of the post from the rebound.
Another goal did finally arrive in the 89th minute though when Rinaudo grabbed his second of the night. He headed home a Corini free kick from the right to confirm his side’s place in the last 32. Palermo top Group E and go into Friday’s draw along with Lokomotiv Moscow and Espanyol.
