Roma’s season is back on track after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Basel saw them through to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.
The Giallorossi went into this final Group E game needing a victory to be certain of their spot in the next round, while Basel required only a draw. However, the 2-2 result between Strasbourg and Red Star Belgrade means the Swiss outfit also qualifies.
Without Antonio Cassano or Vincenzo Montella, Francesco Totti played on despite struggling with a foot injury and Shabani Nonda took the centre-forward role.
It took just 12 minutes for Roma to break the deadlock, as Daniele De Rossi and Muller both rose to meet a cross and Rodrigo Taddei slammed in the loose ball at the near post. Goalkeeper Zuberbuhler could perhaps have done better on this angled drive.
The Swiss shot-stopper made up for his error by fingertipping Totti’s free kick off target soon after, then rushed off his line to close down Taddei as he ran on to the captain’s through ball.
Roma were very lucky to maintain their lead on 26 minutes, as Ergic nodded a corner kick on to the crossbar. Moments later, Delgado skipped past De Rossi and thumped his shot on to the upright from 22 metres.
Simone Perrotta set up a great opportunity for Nonda, but he hesitated in a one-on-one situation and allowed Muller to clear for a corner.
There was bad news when Christian Panucci limped off with an injury and made way for Cristian Chivu, but just before the break Totti doubled the Giallorossi’s lead by springing the offside trap on Perrotta’s long pass and firing home a half-volley.
The result was put beyond doubt after the restart, as Alberto Aquilani set Nonda running and the former Monaco man netted at the near post with the inside of his right foot.
Delgado continued to threaten and drilled inches past the upright, while Gianluca Curci saved an Ergic effort. Totti wasted a great chance to make it 4-0, then hesitated to finish off a team move when he only had the goalkeeper to beat.
Basel got back into the game 10 minutes from time, as Degen combined passes with Baykal and rolled across for the simplest of Petric tap-ins, but it was too late to mount a real comeback. In fact, Zuberbuhler performed a crucial save on Daniele De Rossi to ensure the scoreline remained at 3-1.
