Roberto Mancini continues to brush aside questions about Inter’s Scudetto chances even after their 13th win in 19 official games.
“Juventus are eight points ahead of us at the moment and if it stays that way then we have to consider them beyond our reach,” said the Nerazzurri boss.
The 2-0 victory away to Lecce this evening maintained the gap, but he concedes it remains quite an obstacle.
“We lost that ground when we struggled against Roma and Lazio in October. I realise we will be facing Juventus in a head to head clash in three weeks’ time, but I doubt we’ll be able to scrape a few more points off them before then.”
The Bianconeri are setting a record-breaking pace, but Inter are also on fine form and are unbeaten in all competitions since the 3-2 home loss to Roma on October 26. Luis Figo and Dejan Stankovic left it relatively late to see off Lecce at the Stadio Via del Mare this evening.
“We took the initiative throughout the match, but the problem was breaking through for the first goal. It was all much easier after that,” added Mancini.
This was new Lecce boss Roberto Rizzo’s debut on the bench after several years of success with the youth squad. Co-tactician Franco Paleari accompanies him in this new experience.
“There is without doubt some regret after this game, as we had the chances to get a positive result out of it,” noted Paleari. “We had to prove what we were capable of and saw some encouraging signs to get out of this situation.”
The Salentini are propping up the table with just 13 points in 22 rounds, having scored 15 goals and conceded 38.
