Luis Figo and Dejan Stankovic maintain the eight-point gap at the top, as Inter ruin Lecce boss Roberto Rizzo's debut.
After the sacking of Silvio Baldini, new Lecce Coach Roberto Rizzo was thrown in at the deep end with Inter's visit to the Stadio Via del Mare. The Nerazzurri were chasing their 10th win in 14 games, but hadn't won here since March 2002.
Vincenzo Sicignano, Alfonso Camorani, Guillermo Giacomazzi and Alex Pinardi were out injured for the home side, while Ze Maria, Alvaro Recoba and the suspended Dejan Stankovic were on the sidelines for Inter. Obafemi Martins is on African Cup of Nations duty and Lecce welcomed Brazilian Babu' back after a long injury lay-off following knee surgery.
Inter had an aggressive start with Adriano nodding Juan Sebastian Veron's free kick over the bar, but Julio Cesar was forced into the first save on a Mirko Vucinic pile-driver from the edge of the box.
Benussi was also tested, flying to tip another Veron set-piece out of the top corner of the net. A Julio Cruz header and Marco Cassetti right-foot strike were not far off the target.
Cruz crossed for Dejan Stankovic, who fired his shot into the ground and the sheer power took it over the bar.
Babu was lively in his first appearance of the season and brought a save out of Julio Cesar at the end of a fine Lecce team move.
Inter started to take control towards the end of the first half and it took a desperate Benussi save to keep out Esteban Cambiasso's left-foot strike on Lorenzo Stovini's short clearance.
Giuseppe Favalli limped off with a muscular problem and made way for Nicolas Andre Burdisso, leaving not a single Italian player on the field for Inter.
After the break, Adriano's fierce effort from 20 metres did not catch Benussi by surprise, while substitute Burdisso failed to make the most of his chance when Veron's free kick found him unmarked inside the area.
The deadlock was eventually broken after 72 minutes. Burdisso and Cambiasso combined, but Stovini's interception was straight at Luis Figo and the ex-Real Madrid star fired in under the crossbar.
Lecce crumbled, as moments later Cristian Ledesma picked up his second yellow card of the evening for a late tackle on Adriano. It's the second time the Argentine midfielder has been dismissed this season.
Nonetheless, Cassetti went close to an equaliser by catching Erminio Rullo's searching pass and drilling it wide of the upright.
Adriano skipped past a challenge through the centre and also skimmed the frame of the goal.
Cassetti was the last to give in and really should've given Lecce a point in the final minutes. Julio Cesar completely misjudged Stovini's pass and Cassetti somehow failed to nod into an empty net from 10 yards.
However, the Nerazzurri put out the final embers of belief with a stoppage-time strike from Stankovic. The Serb's right-foot effort from the edge of the box beat Benussi under the crossbar.
