Inter Coach Roberto Mancini was satisfied with his side’s away draw with Lazio in the Italian Cup last night. "We’re pleased with the result," he said.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Paolo Di Canio and Nicolas Burdisso were given their marching orders for fighting after just four minutes at the Stadio Olimpico.
Thereafter chances were aplenty in the first half, but Dejan Stankovic’s 26th minute goal and Christian Manfredini’s equaliser just 60 seconds later were the only goals of the match.
"It was a false result really because of the two sendings-off," said Mancini. "It would have been better playing with two strikers but both sides battled well.
"We knew that Lazio are a great side and that it would be a hard game so we’re pleased with the result," he surmised, before adding that it was a great feeling returning to play against his old side. "Coming to the Olimpico is always very nice."
Mancio’s opposite number at Lazio, meanwhile, felt that his side were worthy of a win, but instead had to witness his team’s fifth straight draw.
"It was a great game and we deserved to win for the way that we played," said Coach Delio Rossi. "The match was conditioned by the red cards, which threw the game-plans out of the window.
"The injury to Fabio Liverani further complicated matters," he added. "We played well as a team, but we created too few chances and didn’t show the quality of the first five to ten minutes.
"We didn’t get what we deserved but we can also do better," he continued. "It’s a shame as it means we need to play well at the San Siro in the return leg."
