Inter maintain the pressure on Juventus with a 3-0 win over Palermo, but it was an open game with dozens of chances for both sides.
The Nerazzurri closed up on leaders Juventus following the midweek round and had to keep winning if they were to have any hope of catching them. Palermo hammered Inter 3-2 in Week 2, a result that flattered Roberto Mancini's men, and have rediscovered their form with a 4-2 victory over Parma on Wednesday.
Both sides were missing important players, as Eugenio Corini, Mariano Gonzalez, Stephen Makinwa, Obafemi Martins, Dejan Stankovic, Ze Maria and Alvaro Recoba were sidelined. Inter's hardline fans continued their protest against their 'colleagues' banned for hurling racist abuse at Messina's Andre Kpolo Zoro by leaving the Curva empty.
The Rosanero had an aggressive start and Massimo Bonanni's angled drive was off target, while David Di Michele was furious when he felt Walter Samuel had fouled him to close down a clear goalscoring opportunity.
At the other end, Cristiano Lupatelli was at full stretch to tip a Kily Gonzalez cross-shot over the crossbar. Esteban Cambiasso's deflected drive was comfortably held.
A high-speed Inter team move saw Juan Sebastian Veron roll across for Luis Figo's low cross, but Cambiasso couldn't keep his shot down from six yards.
Di Michele's pace was causing problems for the home side and Ivan Cordoba and Julio Cesar had to come together to block the ex-Udinese man's finish after he had run on to Massimo Mutarelli's through ball.
Inter almost took the lead on the half-hour mark. Lupatelli rushed out to close down Cruz, but he only passed it straight to Luis Figo. The ex-Real Madrid man's immediate chip was heading for the empty net only for Andrea Barzagli to get back for a decisive goalline clearance.
The goal was only delayed by a couple of minutes. A corner kick was touched on by Cordoba for Esteban Cambiasso's header from six yards that went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Palermo fought back and Simone Barone's deflected shot from the edge of the box was well smothered by Julio Cesar.
The Sicilians required their second goalline clearance of the game on the stroke of half-time, as Christian Terlizzi stuck out a leg to block Adriano's attempt with Lupatelli beaten.
Fabio Grosso's free kick was palmed round the post at full stretch by Julio Cesar, as it remained an open game with chances for both sides.
Moments later, Palermo really couldn't have gone closer to a spectacular equaliser. A free kick was cleared as far as Barone, whose magnificent half-volley slammed the base of the upright.
The visitors were pinning Inter back into their own half and a Mutarelli effort was deflected just past the near post, then a powerful Andrea Caracciolo set-piece skimmed the woodwork.
Inter had a chance on the counter-attack ruined when Adriano's dummy made him active, therefore ruining Veron's scoring opportunity. Giuseppe Favalli was booked for taking his protests too far.
A Figo cross went past three players before Kily Gonzalez stung Lupatelli's palms at the far post.
It was end to end stuff and substitute Denis Godeas hesitated on Di Michele's backheel, then as the move continued Adriano sprinted forward and blasted over the bar.
Lupatelli somehow managed to push away a rocket of a half-volley from Kily Gonzalez as a corner came out to the edge of the box.
However, at the other end Veron required a goalline clearance to keep out Mutarelli's looping header from a corner kick. Palermo also had timid penalty appeals waved away for Samuel's shirt tug on Godeas.
Inter incredibly wasted a double chance to double their lead. Adriano rolled across for Figo, who was closed down by Santana, but he clattered into Accardi and the ball came out to the Brazilian to balloon over the bar!
The goal eventually arrived a minute later. A corner kick was flicked on by Cordoba and it took a final deflection off Terlizzi's knee.
Palermo were hit hard by this and soon after Inter made it 3-0 with another set-piece. Luis Figo's free kick went past everyone and slotted in at the back post.
