Serie A Week 20 - 18/1/05 (19.30 UK)
Cruz 23 (I)
Stadio Tenni
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Julio Ricardo Cruz's seventh goal of the season proved enough to beat Treviso and close the gap on Juve to eight points.
The Nerazzurri climbed back into second place at the weekend and were eager to stay there with a win against bottom of the table Treviso. With Obafemi Martins away on African Cup of Nations duty, Dejan Stankovic suspended and Giuseppe Favalli, Jose Ze Maria and Marco Andreolli injured, Coach Roberto Mancini had to make some changes. Juan Sebastian Veron returned from a ban to bolster the midfield.
Julio Cesar got down well to block a deflected Francesco Parravicini strike from distance, while Marco Borriello was furious when his penalty appeals for an Ivan Cordoba shirt tug were waved away. Replays suggest the Treviso forward had good reason to complain.
Inter hit back and Adriano Zancope' flew to fingertip an Esteban Cambiasso header over the bar.
The Nerazzurri opened the scoring on 23 minutes, as Julio Ricardo Cruz rose to nod in a cross from Nicolas Andre Burdisso.
Treviso were not cowed by the visiting giants and Andre Pinga's splendid free kick rattled the crossbar with fellow Brazilian Julio Cesar beaten.
Inter also hit the woodwork, as Adriano skipped past William Viali and thumped the near post from close range.
Julio Cesar suffered an injury after he fumbled Parravicini's free kick and clattered into Borriello as both rushed towards the loose sphere.
Zancope' performed a difficult reaction save on goalscorer Cruz, but neither side could create many chances after the break.
Former Anderlecht man Walter Baseggio, who had long been linked with a move to Inter, made his Treviso debut in the final 10 minutes.
