Coach Roberto Mancini has identified Simone Inzaghi as the possible solution to Inter’s goalscoring problems, according to reports in Italy.
Mancini was left with egg on his face after claiming, at the end of last week, that Juventus would slip up on Saturday night and allow his side to close the gap on the Bianconeri the following day.
In reality the exact opposite happened as Juve registered their 16th win in 18 matches and the Nerazzurri slumped to a disappointing 0-0 draw in Siena.
Now, with Obafemi Martins about to leave for the African Nations Cup and new signing Victor Obinna possibly joining his new teammate on Nigerian national team duty, Mancini is desperate for a player capable of scoring "simple goals" and Inzaghi’s is the latest name to be mentioned in Italy.
Pippo’s younger sibling is having a hard time of it at present. Having scored just one Serie A goal in the last three years, Inzaghi has been largely ignored by Lazio Coach Delio Rossi, who has consigned 29-year-old to just seven appearances from the bench this season.
Having coached Inzaghi during his tenure in Rome, Mancini is said to be interested in reuniting with his former charge and coaxing goals from a player who has failed to live up to his brother’s achievements.
It wouldn’t be the first time Mancio has called upon old friends from his time with the Biancocelesti. Giuseppe Favalli, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Dejan Stankovic and Juan Sebastian Veron are all former Laziali who have joined the Inter revolution.
Meanwhile, in confirmed transfer news, Treviso have signed Walter Baseggio from Anderlecht.
The 28-year-old Belgian midfielder, who has agreed a loan switch, will be unveiled to the media on Wednesday.
