news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/3706288.stmNewcastle and Rangers are among the top seeds for the draw of the inaugural group stage of the Uefa Cup. That means they will avoid the likes of Lazio, Parma and Feyenoord. Middlesbrough are in pot three, while Hearts are in the fourth group paving the way for possible Battle of Britain encounters for those two clubs. Since teams from the same nation cannot face each other in the group stage, Boro could face Rangers or Hearts, who may be drawn with Newcastle. When the draw from the five pots of eight teams is concluded, there will be eight groups of five teams. The top three in each group will advance to the last 32 where they will be joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the Champions League group stage. From February, the competition will revert to the home and away knock-out format, with the exception of the single-match final. The dates 21 October, 4 and 25 November, 1, 2, 15 and 16 December have been allocated for the group matches.
