Figo had announced before the final that he would certainly retire in the event of victory, but the shock defeat to Greece caused a rethink. Although he was tempted to stay on hand help his nation's attempts to qualify for the next World Cup in Germany, Figo has decided to retire. This will allow the 31-year-old to concentrate on his club career with Real Madrid this season, although he has hinted that it could also be his last campaign with the Spanish giants.
