United look set to be without the services of skipper Paul Butler for a few weeks if it is confirmed the defender has broken a bone in his foot.
The 32-year-old was in magnificent form at Cardiff in the first half but did not reappear after the break, and manager Kevin Blackwell later revealed he had been a doubt before the game after damaging it against Millwall.
"It looks as if it could be a broken foot," Blackwell said fearfully.
"He did it on Sunday and we thought he could get away with it thinking it was heavy bruising, but unfortunately it looks a lot worse than that."
Butler will have the foot scanned today to determine the full extent of the damage but he looks to be almost certainly ruled out of Saturday's trip to high flying Luton.
The captain's place was taken by Matthew Kilgallon in the second half at Ninian Park, and the youngster was unlucky to concede the winning penalty for handball inside the area.
Team-mate Shaun Derry hopes he can put it behind him.
"It's a big blow losing your captain because he's a good player for us and a big voice on the pitch," said Shaun.
"But the gaffer has gone on record saying we have 23 players all capable of putting on the shirt and it was a good opportunity for Kilgallon tonight, and he needs to take his chances.
"I thought he did well apart from the handball and they are costly errors we need to learn from.
"From my angle there was a handball there, but I think at the other end we were hard done by to say the least because when Eric's had his shot it definitely hit one of the Cardiff defenders hands and it's decisions like that that cost you points."
