Inter fought back twice to earn a point away to Sampdoria following a brace of Aimo Diana headers.
The midweek round was traumatic for both sides and Inter's Scudetto hopes lay in tatters after their shock 3-2 home defeat to struggling Roma. Juan Sebastian Veron was sent off in that game and Coach Roberto Mancini was also handed a two-match ban for insulting the referee, so the former Samp heroes were relegated to the stands of Marassi along with Marco Materazzi. The Blucerchiati also lost on Wednesday away to leaders Juventus and welcomed back Francesco Flachi from suspension.
It took just six minutes for Sampdoria to find a way through, as Pisano ran down the left flank and put in a cross for Aimo Diana's looping header at the back post.
Obafemi Martins started the day after his 21st birthday and immediately brought a tough one-handed save out of Francesco Antonioli. The Nigerian then set up Adriano, who fired straight at the goalkeeper.
The home side had a strong first half and could've doubled their lead with another header, this time Julio Cesar got a hand to Emiliano Bonazzoli's effort from a Cristian Zenoni centre.
Both sides had promising free kick situations, Palombo's follow-up to a charged down Flachi attempt blocked at full stretch by Julio Cesar, while a trademark Sinisa Mihajlovic set-piece was turned over by Antonioli.
There were chances at both ends of the pitch before Inter equalised on the half-hour mark. Martins held up the ball from a Mihajlovic corner kick in a challenge with Marcello Castellini and Esteban Cambiasso controlled to fire home from with his left foot.
The situation lasted for just four minutes, as no sooner had Inter finished celebrating, they conceded a similar goal to the first. Once again, Italian international midfielder Diana rose undisturbed to nod in a Zenoni cross.
The Nerazzurri are certainly not short on character and got right back into it from another set-piece. Mihajlovic's free kick from the left found Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, who got to the ball ahead of Bonazzoli to nod in the fourth goal of a spectacular first half.
Luigi Sala performed a decisive defensive intervention on Luis Figo as he prepared to pull the trigger, while Julio Cesar comfortably held a long-range Flachi volley and Diana attempt.
After the break, Cambiasso almost turned the game around completely, as Adriano set up the Argentine for a fierce strike that Antonioli brilliantly managed to tip over the crossbar.
Inter were much more solid in the second half and had another great scoring opportunity when Martins was clear on goal, but Antonioli was again brave to push him out for a corner.
There was a flurry of chances in the closing stages, as Adriano threaded through for Martins only for the Nigerian to fire wide from a good position.
At the other end, substitute Lamberto Zauli's cross came in for Bonazzoli, whose precise header thumped the crossbar. It was a lucky let-off for the Nerazzurri, who have now picked up just one point from their last two games.
