Alvaro Recoba has admitted that he thought his Inter career was over before the arrival of Alberto Zaccheroni.
The Uruguayan has been something of an enigma over the years but he’s now starting to deliver his true potential under new boss Zac.
"I went to Massimo Moratti and told him that I was ready to leave," he explained to the ‘La Repubblica’ newspaper.
"Yet I’ve had a rethink since the club decided for a change in Coach. Zaccheroni has waited for me and he allows me to play in peace. The side also plays in a more enjoyable manner."
Recoba has been exceptional in the past few weeks which is in stark contrast to his displays under former tactician Hector Cuper.
"In Cuper’s 4-4-2 I just ran a lot without ever being in the right position to get the ball," he continued.
"I hit rock bottom last season as a player. The Champions’ League semi-final defeat to Milan was the lowest point.
"I got everything wrong in that game. I shouldn’t really have played at all as I just wasn’t right mentally and physically."
The Uruguayan was heavily criticised after that game, with many claiming that his salary didn’t correspond with his ability.
"I’ve heard some absurd figures when it comes to my contract," he noted. "A lot of players earn more than me.
"Anyway, mine wasn’t the only signature on the deal. Even if since then I have accepted a cut in wages."
So what now for Recoba? "I just hope to keep being of use to the side," he added. "I want to be more consistent."
The forward may be back in action on Thursday night as Inter take on Juventus in the second-leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final. The Turin tie ended in a 2-2 draw.
