Marco Materazzi and Bruno Cirillo have shaken hands and put their disgraceful altercation behind them. The Inter defender was suspended until March 29 for punching the Siena man after their 4-0 win on Feb 1. “I really wanted to apologise and put it all behind me,” commented the Italian international. The meeting was specially organised by the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ newspaper and the AIC Players' Association. “I have had the opportunity to reflect upon what I did and, with help from my wife, realise I acted improperly,” continued Materazzi. “The fact that I did not appeal against the decision shows that I accept responsibility for my actions.” Cirillo required stitches to a split lip after the scuffle, which the Disciplinary Commission report dubbed “a gratuitous act of violence without provocation.” “I also had support from my girlfriend Carola,” added the Siena player, “and decided that forgiveness was the best policy at this point.” “This is an important signal to the world of football, as there are too many peaks and troughs right now. What was needed was stability and to hear the apology face to face.”
