Arsenal may well worry as Inter confidently crushed Reggina 6-0 with a Fabio Cannavaro screamer to open the rout.
Alberto Zaccheroni made changes to his line-up, some forced by injuries to Emre Belozoglu, Marco Materazzi, Francesco Coco and Alvaro Recoba.
Surprisingly, youngster Giovanni Pasquale was drafted back in after being ignored by Hector Cuper so far this season. Obafemi Martins also made his first start under Zac's reign to partner Christian Vieri.
The giant hitman was also a doubt for this game after missing midweek training with flu, but he had the first real effort after six minutes by blasting over from distance.
Reggina goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi was tested soon after when he only just palmed away a deflected corner kick and the defence managed to scramble out the follow-up.
There was bad news for Reggina on nine minutes, as Andrea Sottil pulled an upper thigh muscle and was stretchered away. Stefano Torrisi stepped in to the breach.
The Nerazzurri kept pushing and Belardi flew to palm a stunning Andy van der Meyde volley over the bar from a good 25 metres. It would have been the goal of the season had the goalkeeper not performed an equally splendid save.
The former Ajax man was determined to get his name on the scoresheet and brought another remarkable block out of Belardi, who also did well to prevent Martins taking advantage of the loose ball.
Reggina were careful at the back, but proved dangerous on the counter-attack with David Di Michele.
Vieri was booked on 23 minutes for handling in the box, but it seemed a harsh decision as he jumped up with two other defenders and appeared to fall on to the ball.
When the opening goal came it was spectacular and unexpected as it arrived from the boot of Fabio Cannavaro. The defender saw a gap in the top corner and drilled in a stunning right-foot drive from a good 35 metres.
The Italy captain has been known to score with headers from set-pieces, but this is easily the most impressive goal of his career and he seemed slightly stunned that the screamer went in.
The Nerazzurri doubled their lead with another well taken strike, this time by Obafemi Martins. The little Nigerian picked up the ball ten metres clear of the box, then skipped three tackles before sliding the ball past Belardi's outstretched hand.
Reggina showed no signs of giving up and Di Michele's brilliant volley was fingertipped out by Francesco Toldo.
Martins used his pace again to sprint past his marker, but Belardi did very well to stay on his feet and block the chip.
There was controversy at the dawn of the second half when Martins ran on to a through ball and fell under pressure from Martin Jiranek, but the referee waved play on.
Inter were on fine form leading up to the Champions' League clash with Arsenal and van der Meyde finally got the better of Belardi. He gathered from Martins just inside the box and slid a powerful angled drive into the far corner for his first Serie A goal.
Vieri's close range header was well parried by Belardi as the home side kept pushing for confidence-boosting goals.
Under-21 international Stefano Dall'Acqua stepped on and almost scored for Reggina, but his tap-in was too weak and dribbled wide of the post.
Inter's substitute was rather more accurate as Francisco Farinos ran on to a delightful van der Meyde through ball and turned a delicate finish past Belardi to make it 4-0.
The former Valencia midfielder was ignored by Cuper and sent out on loan last season, but has been rediscovered under Zaccheroni's guidance.
Zac chose another inspired substitution as Julio Cruz made it five with his second touch of the game. The Argentine ran on to another intelligent Martins through ball and slid the ball past the Reggina goalkeeper.
The 5-0 scoreline equals Reggina's worst ever Serie A defeat, but under Zaccheroni Inter seem to have a taste for more goals.
The Amaranto did not give in and Dall'Acqua sprung the offside trap only to balloon over with only Toldo to beat.
Cruz was ready to slam in a sixth when Martinez stole in with a crucial challenge.
Christian Vieri finally bagged the sixth by using his strength to muscle off his marker and toe-poke it in off the far post with his left foot. The striker appeared to celebrate a little more than in recent outings, but still seemed below-par.
Belardi prevented a seventh by rushing off his line to parry another Cruz effort in the final minutes and on the resulting corner Vieri flicked it over the bar.
Obafemi Martins limped off with a muscular problem in the closing stages and as Inter had completed their substitutions they finished in ten men. It is not yet clear whether the Nigerian can recover in time for Tuesday's Champions' League showdown with Arsenal.
